【Seminar Series】Characterization and Restoration of Traditional Taiwanese Deity Statues

【Seminar Series】Characterization and Restoration of Traditional Taiwanese Deity Statues
Date: March 23, 2022
Time: 13:30-15:30
Location: Yunshui Hall N117

The second invited speaker for this semester's Buddhist Studies Seminars will be Prof. YANG Shaoxin, Department of Cultural Artifacts, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology.

Idol craftsmanship in Taiwan has a history of more than 150 years, yet our modern understanding of this lost craft is quite limited, because the lineage of such artisanry has drastically declined after the arrival of industrial manufacturing and modern technology.  For the sake of cultural preservation, beside an understanding of the historical legends of these deities and their clothing/attire, paraphernalia, pantheon rank, retinue, and ritual, we require a comprehensive grasp of the various lineages/schools of clay, carpentry, paint, and other crafts in the Fujian/Taiwan region.  Only after scrutiny of the material, style, and origin of a particular damaged deity statue can restoration and repair be properly attempted.  Prof. Yang will share many photos and stories from his years of experience in this field.

This activity is open to all interested students and faculty.  Guests from the general public are requested to register here, at least four days before the event.  Please refer to the poster below for more information.  In case of any other questions, please contact us!
